BATTLE OF THE SOLSTICE - SECOND BATTLE OF PIAVE
By the spring of 1918, the Austrian command had amassed a large number of troops along the Piave. At 3 in the morning on the 15th June the Austro-Hungarian army launched an all out frontal attack along the river. Under heavy artillery barrage the Austro hungarian crossed the Piave, taking the troops defending the Montello by surprise. By late morning they had gained a bridgehead that spanned from Falze to Colfosco on the northern bank to Nervesa-Giavera- Casa Serena to the south.Heavy fighting continued from the 16th to 23rd June up until the Austro-Hungarian army was forced to retreat. In a week 240,000 men, lost their lives in this part of the Piave: Italian, Austrian, English, Hungarian, German, Czech, Slovak, French, Polish and Slavs; people of this modern Europe.
